MARCHESI DI BAROLO DOCG 2016 RISERVA DELLA CASA
Marchesi di Barolo
Our top Barolo, the Marchesi di Barolo Riserva della Casa 2016 has just been recognised in the World's Best Sommeliers' Selection:
After being awarded a stunning 97 points by James Suckling (Italian Wine expert and critic) here is a summary of what the WBSS said:
"Only made in exceptional vintages, the grapes that went into Marchesi di Barolo Risvera 2016 were meticulously selected. Aged in a combination of wood and concrete, including four years in Slavonian oak, it's released eight years after the harvest and is a wine of considerable structure and finesse that's best enjoyed with beef.
Marchesi di Barolo's historical cellars and deep ties to Barolo's heritage are reflected in this Riserva – an archetype of traditional winemaking and a benchmark for the longevity and nobility of Nebbiolo from the 2016 vintage.
Tasting notes: a classic style of Barolo from one of the great families in the region, with 10 years on the clock this wine is hitting its drinking window with a rich nose of candied fruit and cherry jam evolving into tertiary flavours of caramelised onion, date, and coffee. On the palate there's a lovely freshness, a hint of wet stone, high acid, firm yet supple tannins, and a beautiful balance between the fruit, texture and body.
Food Pairings: a wine of this heft can stand up to rich meat dishes. Try it with a ribeye steak, braised beef cheek in a creamy mushroom sauce, or beef goulash."
